The Fall River Street Tree Planting Program, in conjunction with a Mass ReLeaf Ministry grant awarded to the First Congregational Church, held a tree planting at Abbott Court Park on King Philip Street in the South End on June 12th. The First Congregational Church "Venture Crew", led by Fonda McKnight, students from Berkley, MA, volunteers from the community and area churches, and volunteers from Green Futures provided the manpower. The Street Tree Planting Program also received an Urban Forestry Planting and Education grant from the Mass. Dept. of Conservation and Recreation to allow the city to hire an educator/arborist and consultants to conduct a citywide tree education program, a tree steward training program, and to create a citywide tree management plan. An educational session outlining the grant projects, the benefit and value of trees, the current status of trees in Fall River and the future of tree care in our city will take place on June 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. at the Fall River Public Library. The Fall River Street Tree Planting Program is also part of the Healthy City 2004-2009 Action Plan. | ||
