Report of Work Groups

Access to Health Care And Healthy Lifestyles

No report from any meeting.  . Follow up to the Disparities PBS show could be a beginning option  for Access to Health Care after June 30 event or showing.  Discussion that Healthy Lives Advisory group could become this new combined group with everyone joining forces for Health and access. This thought will be addressed with chairpersons of these groups after Steering Committee elections in September.

Healthy Youth

Jamison Souza reports that TEAM FRESH will meet with the mayor in a couple of weeks to present the outcome of the Mayor’s Youth summit . They are working over the summer in subcommittees for each of the five promises and the short and long term goals set for each of these promises.  Youth will be hired over the summer under the prevention grant to do activities to keep kids busy in the parks. They will have leader’s training  again to keep things going with the students that performed so well at the summit. Jamison announced that Fall River has had the title of 100 BEST continued for another year because the Alliance will be awarding these every other year from now on. We will have to reapply for 2010.

The Park and Recreation Conference will be held October 26 –28 in Fall River focusing on Healthy Communities .CD Recreation and others  will be able to highlight all the activities that have occurred over the past year at this conference.

Healthy City Initiative

Dave Weed reported that the issue of transportation is on several agendas  of groups in Fall River including UIA and the youth so the meeting that occurs with the mayor could start a working group on this topic.

6/19/ free bus day.

Walk to School  There will be a total of 6 schools  participating this year starting in the Fall. The hope is that all schools will do some form of walking  or 15 minutes a day of vigorous exercise for all students.

October 21, 2008 Ounce of Prevention Conference returns.  The CHNA  will look into being involved in this conference.  We talked about that we could be nominated for awards they are presenting.

David Announced that Mike Ramos is the coordinator for the Healthy Lives Grant for the Fall River Municipal employees. Just beginning to review the walking routes and waiting for permission to get footprints on the sidewalk this summer. Could be a project for the students. Hoping to get discounts at Healthy dining areas to randomly hand out to walkers throughout the city.

Micro Grant Healthy City – Grant will be discussed at Design team next Thursday and then will be reviewed by small committee and then distributed. This is the last of the $12,000 10 – $500.00 grants.

Healthy City newsletter distributed next week.

Unnatural Causes Presentation all ready for June 30, 2008 at Rachel’s Lakeside. Discussion occurred to make sure we are getting persons there that should hear this message.  Some members of the CHNA spoke about groups they would contact.
