Minutes for the Meeting of July 12, 2002

Present: Ellen Banach, Gladys Rosofsky, Diane Colletti, Alan Silvia, Mike Coughlin, Karen Statser, Joan Gancarski, Jeff Sypek, Bea Medeiros, Dr. David Weed, Marcia Picard, Denise Wright, and Michelle Rapoza

A meeting of Partners for a Healthier Community was held on Friday, July 12, 2002 at South Coast Hospital. Chairperson Karen Scott Statser called the meeting to order at 8:35 AM.

Minutes

The minutes of the July 12, 2002 Steering Committee meeting were circulated in advance.

VOTED to approve the Minutes of the July 12, 2002 meeting of Partners for a Healthier Community as circulated.

Financial Report

Financial Report for June 2002 was circulated. Karen Statser answered any questions because Joe Borges was on vacation. There was an error on 6/19/02 check#286 for $11.83. It should have been $111.83. BJ will clarify with Joe.

REPORT OF WORK GROUPS

Access to Health Care

Diane reported that they are still working with Fire City Production/Paul Martin. The final draft of the video has not been completed.

Healthy Lifestyles

Michelle discussed work on the Overweight in Youth project. They are developing a flyer on healthier eating and nutrition that will be available to schools. A packet will be distributed to families when children apply for financial assistance for meals. The Healthy Lifestyles meeting is the third Thursday of the month from 3:00-4:30 at the VNA.

Healthy Youth

BJ thanked everyone for attending the poster contest awards. BJ, Dave Weed, Sue Sterrett, Cathy Veira Baker and Bea Medeiros worked on a $ 25,000 planning grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield. They expect to hear from Blue Cross Blue Shield soon. The Healthy Youth will not be meeting in July or August.

Fresh Air Network

Michelle reported that they have 3 billboards up in Somerset, Swansea and Westport to educate the community about the problem of second hand smoke. The group is working closely with restaurants in Westport that may be smoke free in the next six months. The FTCP Program has been working with the network to place ads in the local newspapers.

Regional Center for Healthier Communities

Mike announced that in all of the changes at Health Care of Southeastern Mass, Florence Seidell has left. Due to funding reductions, Health Care is merging functions for the areas they serve. There are still six regional centers across the state but all will operate at reduced levels.

David Weed recently updated the Partners web site. Members who would like to post information on the calendar should email him at david.weed@state.ma.us.

Adjourn

The meeting adjourned at 9:50 am. The next meeting for Partners for a Healthier Community will be held on September 13, 2002 at the Charlton site of Southcoast Hospitals Group, in the Jackson Conference Room.
