Minutes for the Meeting of April 12, 2002

Present:

Oliveira, and Carol Furtado.

A meeting of Partners for a Healthier Community was held on Friday, April 12, 2002 at the Charlton site of Southcoast Hospitals Group. Chairperson Karen Scott Statser called the meeting to order at 8:35 AM.

The minutes of the March 08, 2002 Steering Committee meeting were circulated in advance.

VOTED to approve the Minutes of the March 08, 2002 meeting of Partners for a Healthier Community as circulated.

The financial report for March was circulated. Joe Borges gave information regarding the financial distribution of funds.

VOTED to approve the Financial Report for March 2002 as presented.

REPORT OF WORK GROUPS

Robert reported that they are still working with Fire City Production/Paul Martin. They are in the process of fine-tuning. There will be two copies of this video. At the next Access to Health Care meeting the video will be viewed. This meeting will be Tuesday April 16^th from 3-4:30. After that, they would like to bring the video to a Partners meeting.

Healthy Lifestyles

Joe discussed the meeting on Overweight in Youth. It was held on March 14^th. Approximately 20 people from the community attended. Opened the meeting with a discussion from everybody to get some input around the main problems on overweight in youth. They will have another meeting on April 18^th to narrow down and strategize on what to do next.

The poster contest is underway, and we have 6 groups participating. They are also in the process of writing a grant in conjunction with the school personnel at Durfee High School. They are trying to put a position in place for a community liaison that will help with parent involvement and to connect social services agencies in the high school. They will also be applying for another grant that Blue Cross Blue Shield is giving out. The Cambodian Mental Health Group will be working with them. MassCall is winding down in the schools. Linda’s report is in, and the researchers should have theirs in by July.

Karen gave an update that she has spoken to staff in the office of the city manager, Jim Smith. We are waiting to hear from Mr. Smith about setting up another meeting.

Michelle Rapoza discussed the media campaign they are doing in Westport on educating people. Hopefully, this will spill over into Fall River where they will also do a media campaign.

Florence handed out a brochure for Trainings and the Prevention Center. The workshop on Evaluation will be held at Bristol Elder Services from 1:00pm-4:00 on Tuesday, April 23^rd. Members of the CHNA are able to register for free. CEU’s will be available. Registration deadline is April 16, 2002. This

Registration will go out to all members of the CHNA in the minutes. They will be offering another workshop on Grant Writing May 23^rd

Karen and the group wished Linda Patricio well as this was her last day working for MassCall. She has accepted another position. She has made some important contributions to this committee.

Ellen brought poster for the Teen Link program

1. Health Link which is a 24 hour automated health recording service that the New Bedford Prevention Sponsorship over 200 health recording messages.
2. Talk Line service provided by the New Bedford YWCA offers teen peer leaders available by phone from 4:30-7:30. They also have a resource book of available services, and they have expanded their resource book from Fall River to Wareham.
3. SouthCoast line for teens to see what activities are going on.

Ellen suggested if any committee member has any teen events coming up to please contact her and she can post them on the Teen Link website.

Congratulations went out to Dr Stewart Kirkaldy who was recently reelected as a Selectman in the town of Westport.

Saul Franklin was introduced and conducted a presentation about MassChip. Anyone interested in attending a more extensive training should submit the registration form that is attached to these minutes. The training session will take place on Wednesday May 22^nd from 10:00-12:30 at CD Recreation 72 Bank Street, Fall River, MA. 02720. The deadline for registration is May 8^th.

The meeting adjourned at 10:00 am. The next meeting for Partners for a Healthier Community will be held on May 10, 2002 at the Charlton site of Southcoast Hospitals Group, in the Jackson Conference Room.
