The 10th Annual Legislative Forum breakfast was held at White's Restaurant on November 13, 2009. New Bedford and Fall River  Community Health Network Area (CHNA) organizations C.O.A.S.T. and Partners for a Healthier Community used the occasion to announce the formation of Voices for a Healthy SouthCoast, a health-improvement initiative spearheaded by Southcoast Hospitals and Y.M.C.A. Southcoast that is just in the formative stages. An ACHIEVE grant (Action Communities for Health, Innovation, and EnVironmental changE) was awarded to the two organizations earlier this year to develop a structure among seventeen communities, most of which are part of the two CHNAs. The project will focus on reducing tobacco use and exposure, promoting physical activity and healthy eating, and improving access to consistent, high-quality preventive health services. Team leaders Donna Querim and Nancy Bonell described the approach to systems, policy and environmental changes that the project will undertake. State Representative John F. Quinn, who attended the ACHIEVE training in Alexandria, VA, earlier in the year, introduced five state legislators, and CHNA chairpersons Marianne DeSouza and Billie Jane Valente presented awards to honor leaders who have contributed to the health of their communities over the past year.
