Summer Youth Outreach Program
Action Plan Participant:
St. Luke's Episcopal Church

This program is aimed primarily at Khmer-speaking teenage young women, aged 15 to 16, who find themselves stressed by strong peer pressure and societal influences to use drugs, drink and engage in dangerous activity. The teens will be encouraged to talk about themselves and work out positive life plans. This program is one of seven Micro-Grant Programs funded by the 2004 Harvard-Pilgrim Healthcare Foundation Healthy Fall River grant.

 

Priority Area:  Safety and Substance Abuse 
Priority Sub-Area:    1,B)     A drug-free community, including enforcement of  tobacco regulations

Goal:

To reduce the use of illegal substances among Khmer-speaking Fall River youth

Method(s):

The program leader will be a successful Khmer-speaking young woman who will make contact with the youth to influence them in positive directions.

Timeline:           Summer, 2004.
Indicators:         Reduction in the number of youth using illegal substances
Progress: This project involved eight Khmer-speaking young women in an eight-week educational and support group led by a criminal justice major from Roger Williams University dealing with topics such as relationships, peer pressure, substance abuse and violence prevention.

By advocating for similar programs and funding.
