Fitness Challenge Frequently Asked Questions

Who does the weigh-ins?

Weigh-ins are done at CD-REC, the Diabetes Association or at any workplace that has a team and team captain. It is important that someone else weighs you to ensure fairness. That person will keep your weight confidential; individual weights are never published without the person's consent.

What do I do if I lose my blue Fitness Challenge bracelet?

Everyone who registers with the Fitness Challenge will be given a blue bracelet to identify themselves as a Challenge member at any of the Challenge activities. Please wear this at all times so others will know you are participating. If you should lose your bracelet, you may obtain a new one for a one dollar replacement charge anytime at CD-REC, 72 Bank Street.

What is BMI?

BMI or Body Mass Index is a standardized way of calculating weight and height together so people of different heights can determine their normal weight range. A normal BMI is considered to be between 18 and 24.9. Overweight is between 25 and 29.9. Obesity is between 30 and 39.9. Morbid obesity is 40 or above. These ranges are used for research on the relationship between weight and risk for the development of illnesses such as type 2 diabetes. Click here for a standard BMI calculator.

Can children be involved in the Fitness Challenge?

The Fitness Challenge was set up for adults age 16 and older. Other Fall River programs, such as Children in Balance, provide information and resources for children through the Fall River schools and local agencies. Ask about HEAT (Healthy Eating Active Time) Clubs at schools and after-school programs. CD-REC also provides a full schedule of activities for children. Children age 8 and older may be able to attend some fitness classes at CD-REC and at the YMCA if accompanied by a parent. Check with the fitness instructor.

If I miss the January 31st Fitness Challenge sign-up deadline, may I still participate?

Yes. Anyone can join the Challenge at anytime until the Finale on May 9th. However, those who do not register and weigh-in by the January 31st deadline may not compete for the grand prizes. You are a winner every time you participate in a fitness activity!
