University of Massachusetts Extension
nutrition educators Jessica Wilcox and Lindsey Magan visited Leo Canuel
and his brother Fabien on their farm
at the end of Wood Street in Somerset, MA on August 8, 2011 in
preparation for a cooking demonstration they plan to do at the Downtown
Farmers' Market in Fall River. This is one of several farm visits
nutrition educators from the program have made to help establish the link
between local farms and the fresh produce that is sold in the three
farmers' markets in Fall River each week. The Canuel Farm has been in
operation since 1903 and provides produce for the Fall River markets as
well as local stores in Somerset. Leo talks about the difficulties of
creating a "certified
organic." garden but uses many organic methods on his farm to
produce an abundance of tomatoes, peppers, corn, beans and other produce
each summer. Click
