On March 31, 2011, each of the Bristol Community College (BCC)  campuses (Fall River, Attleboro and New Bedford) added peace poles to their respective campuses, as a visual symbol of peace. The poles were constructed by YouthBuild of Fall River and the entire project was student-led. BCC students selected the languages to be included on the poles through an online survey. Each pole contains the message "may peace prevail on earth" in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Students designed and painted the poles as part of a service project through the Center for Civic Engagement, led by Melissa Masse. Speakers included: Mayor Flanagan; Sally Cameron, Vice President of College Communication, BCC; Wendy Garff-Lipp of United Neighbors; Michael Vieira, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, BCC; Jenn Boulay, Civic Engagement Coordinator, BCC. Working with the World Peace Prayer Society, United Neighbors uses a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary five-prong approach to address gang and youth violence in the city of Fall River.
