The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program promotes healthy alternatives for children and parents in their travel to and from school. It educates students, parents and community members on the value of walking and bicycling for travel to and from school. About 100 students from the Spencer Borden Elementary School on the North Side of Fall River celebrated the Massachusetts Walk To School Day on May 5, 2010, by walking the 0.4 mile along Stanley Street to the School from the former Highland School on Robeson Street. Assistant Principal Michael Ward organized the event with the help of several teachers and parents who accompanied the students for the fifteen minute walk. He plans to encourage the students and their parents to make walking to school a regular occasion to improve student health and morale. Click here to see the video of the event.
