Public health
practitioners and advocates gathered at the
Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade
Center in Marlboro, MA, on October 14, 2009, for the 13th
Ounce of Prevention conference
sponsored by the Massachusetts
Department of Public Health (DPH). Chief of Staff for the Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services Caya Lewis gave the keynote address
and described the impact of the national Affordable
Care Act on prevention resources. The conference included three
plenary sessions and nine workshops on a variety of prevention-related topics,
including one on worksite wellness programs presented by Sue Potvin, R.N.,
of the Family Service Association. The
Commissioner's Leadership Award was presented to G. Dean Cleghorn of the
Greater Lawrence Family Health Center. Community Health and Equity awards were given to exemplary organizations in
four of
the six DPH regions, including an award to Pat Bebo and Marcia Picard
for their work on the Children
