The Fall River Police Association sponsored a Gates of the City 5K Road Race on June 6, 2010 as part of the Day of Portugal celebration. Over 70 runners competed along the course that ran from Ponta Delgada Boulevard along Bay Street to Slade Street and back to the Gates of the City. A portion of the proceeds from the race were donated to benefit Fall River Hospice and Palliative Care. Awards were given to the first male and female finishers, as well as to top finishers in eight age divisions and to the top three overall police officers. "Other than the Thomas J. Giunta Memorial 5K Road Race, there are few races in Fall River," noted Fall River police officer Mike Pereira. "We thought the annual Day of Portugal event was a good one to celebrate Fall River's connection with Sao Miguel, Acores, Fall River's sister city," he added. To see the race results, go to the Cool Running website. For more information about the race, contact Race Director Bruce Tavares at 508-676-8511, x125.
