Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer (excluding skin
cancers) diagnosed in both men and women in the United States, yet the
survival rate has improved steadily for the past 20 years. Pre-cancerous
polyps are found by screening and removed before they can develop
into cancers. Screening is also allowing more colorectal cancers to be
found earlier when the disease is easier to cure. In order to explain
the impact of colorectal screening on early detection and improved
survival,
Saint
Anne's Hospital
offered
a free educational program
featuring three area experts on June 24, 2009 in the hospital’s
Nannery Conference Room.
Gastroenterologist
Thomas Capozza, MD,
presented information about
the value of colorectal screening and practical advice about healthy
lifestyle, risk factors, the latest screening guidelines and options,
treatment for precancerous polyps and colon cancer. Associated with
PrimaCARE Gastroenterology,
Fall River, Dr. Capozza is board-certified in gastroenterology and
internal medicine.
