The Fall River Public Library’s own “Wing and a Prayer Puppeteers” presented the original puppet presentation of “It’s Arbor Day", on April 24, 2009 in celebration of Arbor Day. Puppet character Rodney Rootbottom shared the origin of this special holiday, as well as the important role trees play in our environment, for children and their parents who gathered in the community room outside the children's library room on the lower floor. Mary Ann Wordell, Fall River's Street Tree Planting coordinator was on hand to pass out pine tree saplings to the children so they could take them home to plant. Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. National Arbor Day, founded by J. Sterling Morton in 1872, is celebrated on the last Friday in April.
