Opportunities
for heart-healthy exercise increased in Fall River when a
half-mile bicycle path was opened on the north shore of South
Watuppa Pond on August 20, 2008. The first portion of the planned
state-funded project known as the Fall River Regional Bikeway was
inaugurated by a group of about twenty-five people, including Rev. James
Hornsby, organizer of the event, Mayor Correia and representatives of
the
highly-praised L.A.L. construction firm in Fall River who carried
out the construction earlier in the year. The pathway, constructed on
former Old Colony Railroad right-of-way, was conceptualized by the
Quequechan River Urban Action Committee, which works with city
government, the Greater Fall
River Chamber of Commerce and
Green Futures on projects that include daylighting the river and
promoting “an urban green area.” The path, along with the
Taunton River boardwalk, is the second constructed with state funds
for the exclusive use of non-motorized transportation.
